October is breast cancer awareness month and I want to encourage everyone to start preforming self-breast exams, this includes the men too and if you are over 40, get your mammogram. I would also like everyone to visit Army of Women and really consider joining the cause. The Army of Women is dedicated to accelerating research into the cause and prevention of breast cancer. Their goal is to form partnerships between women and scientists. "The key to ending breast cancer is to learn how to stop it before it starts." Dr. Susan Love.
Here are a few interesting yet disturbing facts:
* Over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
*Over 40,000 women will die of breast cancer this year alone. That is one woman dieing of the disease every 13 minutes.
* There is one woman being diagnosed every 3 minutes.
*One in eight women has had or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
*Approximately 1,700 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die each year.
*If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 96%.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is another great site to get more information on and to get involved in breast cancer research and prevention.
